[SHOW 83] MUMBLE RAP VS HIP HOP

“I appreciate it. I party to it. If I go out and they’re playing Migos, I’ll listen to that, but a favorite mumble rapper? I don’t know about all that. I like to be able to say the lyrics too.” – Dave Chappelle

Welcome to Show 83 Mumble Rap vs Hip Hop!! (Sound effects DUN! DUN! DUN!) Did she really go there?! I sure did. There has to be objectivity when talking about what constitutes a certain music genre… 10 years ago it was challenging to be a lyricist and be at the top of the charts. It’s not that I mind that this type of music exists (mumble rap), all music has it’s place but it’s not Hip Hop. In majority of mumble rap, there’s no trace of the art of emceeing. The 4 elements of hip hop were originally outlined by Afrika Bambaataa and Zulu Nation; MC, DJ, Graffiti, B-Boy. The longest standing element of the 4 is MC. Rhymes and word play are what initially distinguished rap from it’s roots in funk and r&b. Today’s music is NOT hip hop. Did I offend some of ya’ll talkin about your favorite artists?
