Anonymous Call to Pro-Marriage Businesses

MysteryWoman

In Australia, several businesses that publicly support marriage equality, have received phone messages from a woman claiming to be a disgruntled client or franchise.

On the evening of August 1, 2015, NSW Sport and Event Management received an anonymous call from a woman who said she would take her business elsewhere, unless they “removed their funding” for the Australian Marriage Equality website.

(I guess we can't tell her we're sorry?… We're not!)2. We're a small business, and we have less than 10 regular clients, all of whom support our organisation. (So who the heck was this?)3. I don't deal directly with children, however if I did, I have a Working With Children Check certificate to say I can look after children. (Strange that she would assume we wouldn't get legal checks done first)4. We do not "fund the Australian Marriage Equality website", merely show our support with our company logo and pledge to promote marriage equality to all Australians, including those who are our staff, volunteers, members, participants and spectators.and…5. Her message will not stop us from supporting marriage equality!Follow our lead and pledge support from your organisation at http://www.corpsupport.org.au
Posted by NSW Sport and Event Management on Monday, July 27, 2015

“We need to let you know that we will no longer be using your organisation… you don’t believe in children having a mother or a father,” the anonymous woman said in the message.

“We are going to send a group email to ensure no one else that we know will use your organisation again until you remove your funding for the Australian Marriage Equality website.”

NSW Sport and Event Management has clarified that their logo on the AME website refers to their support of marriage equality, but they do not “fund” the website. Curiosity of the woman’s identity arises. NSW Sport and Event Management wrote on Facebook that as a small business with a specific audience, it was unlikely she was actually a client of theirs. The call to NSW Sport and Event Management, came after several near-identical calls to other businesses that have publicly expressed their support in AME.

Messages left with Mortgage Choice in Newtown, Sydney and Pink Ginger Photography in Canberra follow the same pattern as the NSW Sport and Event Management phone call. The woman claimed to be a Mortgage Choice franchise, saying the Newtown office should rescind its support for marriage equality.

Many still cannot digest the fact that marriage equality is going global. It’s saddening that someone is going this far to try to hinder the progress of the LGBTQ community.

What do you think of this anonymous woman’s efforts against marriage equality for the LGBTQ community? Let’s start a conversation in the comments!
